Why Zao Uses Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles in Sunscreen?
● Safer alternative to chemical filters
Zao avoids chemical/organic UV filters, which can irritate skin, act as endocrine disruptors, speed up skin ageing and harm marine life.
● Mineral filter with strict labelling
EU law requires zinc oxide to be labelled “[nano]” when any nanoparticles may be present; this is a precaution and does not mean it is dangerous.
● No evidence of skin absorption
A 2012 European Scientific Committee study found no evidence that nano zinc oxide in sunscreen is absorbed through healthy skin.
● More soluble and easier to eliminate
Zinc oxide is more water‑soluble than titanium dioxide, so the body can break it down into zinc ions and eliminate it more easily, reducing long‑term build‑up.
● Zinc is natural and essential for the body
The human body naturally contains 2–3 g of zinc, important for immunity, wound healing, growth and enzyme function, and it is even used as a dietary supplement. Titanium is not naturally present in the body.
● Lower risk of persistence in organs
Titanium dioxide nanoparticles have been found in organs like the liver, lungs and brain, suggesting they can persist there; zinc oxide nanoparticles are less often found, indicating better breakdown or elimination.
● Proven coral-friendly
Independent ReefTox 12 tests on 12 coral species showed no coral necrosis with Zao sunscreens, indicating a low impact on marine ecosystems.
● Overall risk assessment
Based on current knowledge, sunscreens that use only zinc oxide as a filter appear to pose the lowest risk for both human health and the environment.
